Seriously though, this is an excellent article and it’s nice (and inspirational) to see you boldly planting your flag in the ground. This should be shared widely as an example of the kind of thought leadership that moves us forward.
Great piece Andrew, especially on how progress fails. We are certainly seeing it in the current political climate.
“Progress wins when it takes zero-sum games and makes them positive-sum.”
Maybe more importantly is that proponents of progress are able to demonstrate the benefits of progress. It’s not enough to make the game positive sum, the broadest number of people must perceive it as such.
Great piece here Andrew on human progress. I love the quote about Nazi Germany, could not have been said better.
We must remember that regimes like this, including the fictional one portrayed in 1984, will inevitably collapse. The seeds of their downfall are ingrained in their DNA.
Progress requires inclusivity, these regimes were anything but, rather they used the fruits of progress for their own oppressive means.
Orwell is correct to caution that progress however, is far from guaranteed. We do not match steadily from the primitive to the advanced. Progress is hard and rests on a delicate balance of counterintuitive factors. Something I have emphasized at Risk & Progress.
Fantastic! This put me in such a good mood, Andrew.
I'm glad!
“Work in progress” - I see what you did there. 😆

You're right, Laura... that's one of the things we're aiming to do here!

Thanks, J.K.! You get it... it's right there in the name of your Substack!
